A blisteringly fast threat that requires longer-range radars and space-based sensors looms on the horizon in the form of hypersonic vehicles and missiles. Busting out of Earth’s lower orbit requires hypersonic vehicles to reach speeds in excess of Mach 5 (about 3,836 mph) and, at hypersonic speeds, they take an absolute beating from the air particles and gases that flow around and interact with their surfaces—particularly on their leading edge.

EDITOR'S PERSPECTIVE

They’re playing together nicely – the Army, Navy, and Air Force, that is – in their efforts to bring a common architecture to electronic systems across all three services. These efforts are resulting in three main initiatives: the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA); Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR)/Electronic Warfare (EW) Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS); and the Hardware Open Systems Technology (HOST).

It is critical to be able to verify the integrity of systems used in military and other applications to ensure that they have not been modified or corrupted. It is of course best to prevent a system from being tampered with. If this can’t be done, it is vital to detect tampering. In many cases it is better to prevent a system from operating at all if you can’t be sure it hasn’t been modified.
